Holiday Hosting, Sacramento-Style: Entertaining Tips to Carry You From October to New Year's

If your calendar looks anything like ours, the stretch from October through New Year's Eve is basically one long, joyful blur of gatherings; a Halloween get-together, a Friendsgiving potluck, a holiday open house, and eventually a champagne toast at midnight. Whether you're hosting in a kitchen you renovated this fall or one that's still on your wish list for next year, the good news is that great holiday entertaining has less to do with a full remodel and more to do with a few smart ideas you can do now to plan ahead—just a few tried-and-true tips from us to you, for hosting well from now through the New Year.

1. Start with a "Landing Zone" Near Your Entry

Before guests ever reach your kitchen island or dining table, they need somewhere to put coats, bags, and gift bottles of wine. A console table, a bench, or even a repurposed bar cart near your front door creates an easy first impression and keeps the rest of your home from becoming a coat check. Layer in a seasonal touch. A bowl of gourds in October, pine in December and you've set the tone before anyone even reaches the party.

2. Let Your Kitchen Island Do the Heavy Lifting

If there's one thing we talk about constantly with Roseville and Folsom homeowners, it's how much an island can contribute to entertaining. Use it as a self-serve station, a charcuterie spread for Friendsgiving, a hot cocoa and cider bar for a December open house, a build-your-own appetizer plate for New Year's Eve. It keeps guests circulating and mingling, and it means you spend less time in the kitchen and more time actually enjoying your own party.

3. Layer Your Lighting for Every Kind of Gathering

Overhead lighting alone makes any room feel like a meeting, not a celebration. A mix of candles, string lights, and a few well-placed lamps instantly warms up a space for evening entertaining, and it's one of the easiest, least expensive upgrades you can make between now and New Year's Eve. Plus, our Designing Dreams Handy pro’s can install it for you.

4. Keep a Rotating "Hostess Kit" Ready to Go

Between October and January, you will likely need a hostess gift more times than you'd like to admit and running to the store on your way to a party is nobody's favorite errand. Keep a small stash of easy, no-fail gifts on hand (more on our favorite below) so you're never caught without one.

5. Build One Great Mocktail Recipe Into Your Repertoire

With Dry January conversations starting earlier every year and more guests opting out of alcohol at holiday parties, having one polished, good-looking mocktail on hand makes every guest feel considered. Below is one of our favorites. It photographs beautifully, batches easily, and works from Halloween straight through New Year's Eve with a simple garnish swap.

Cranberry Rosemary Fizz (Mocktail)

Ingredients (per glass):

  • 3 oz cranberry juice (100% juice, not cocktail blend)

  • 1 oz fresh lime juice

  • ½ oz rosemary simple syrup (recipe below)

  • Chilled sparkling water or club soda, to top

  • Fresh rosemary sprig and a few whole cranberries, for garnish

Rosemary simple syrup: Combine 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer, stir until sugar dissolves, then remove from heat and let steep for 20 minutes. Strain and refrigerate — it keeps for up to two weeks and is worth batching ahead of your first gathering.

To build: Fill a glass with ice, add the cranberry juice, lime juice, and rosemary syrup, and stir. Top with sparkling water, garnish with a rosemary sprig and a few floating cranberries, and serve. For New Year's Eve, swap the sparkling water for sparkling cider for a celebratory finish.

6. Give a Hostess Gift That Skips the Guesswork

If you want to be the guest who's remembered, bring something that feels a little more intentional without requiring a shopping trip to three different stores.

Our no-fail pick: A beautifully packaged olive oil or local honey with wood cutting board, or dipping bowls. It's useful long after the party ends, it works for literally every host on your list—Thanksgiving, a neighbor's cocktail party, or New Year's Day. We love locally grown olive oil from Twin Rocks Estate Winery located in Granite Bay  not far from our new Roseville showroom. Grown and bottled in small batches, Extra Virgin and basil are among our favorite selections.

Renovation Resolutions For The New Year

We'll be honest, we don't expect anyone to book and finish a kitchen remodel between now and New Year's. But if this season of hosting has you noticing that your kitchen layout, storage, or lighting isn't quite keeping up with how you actually entertain, tuck that thought away. Spring is prime remodeling season in Roseville and Folsom, and we'd love to be the first call you make when you're ready. In the meantime, happy hosting, happy holiday season, and we hope to see you again soon.
