It’s not surprising that 57% of homeowners have a fireplace, wood-burning stove, or other hearth products in their home, and that many use them frequently, according to nehpba.org. While most homeowners may not prioritize the fireplace as a home improvement project, it becomes a crucial focal point when the room is visible from your newly renovated kitchen. That’s exactly why Roseville interior designer Angela Ungureanu’s clients decided to expand their renovation plans from a kitchen to a full first floor home renovation. Angela’s clients, who moved from San Jose to Granite Bay, California, chose to add the living room to their list of home renovations. Their goal? To create an inviting seating and entertaining area opposite their newly renovated kitchen.
Creating a Cohesive Design in Your Remodel
How do you create a cohesive design between two rooms in your home? Start with a unifying color palette, flooring and incorporate a similar design aesthetic. Using colors already selected to renovate her client’s Granite Bay kitchen, Angela used them as a jumping off point for her clients fireplace remodel, pulling dark grey tones from the kitchen island, then layering in additional warm tones to achieve the cozy and inviting space her clients desired. Already committed to new flooring in the kitchen, Angela continued her clients new wood floors into the living room to ensure the design was cohesive.
Secrets to Updating Your Existing Fireplace
When embarking on this fireplace remodel, Angela’s clients decided to keep their existing fireplace insert, both a sustainability and budget-consciousness decision. Adding a natural element to her client’s design that tied in with natural wood shelves in the kitchen, Angela selected a custom wood mantle, introducing a touch of rustic charm. The fireplace was flanked with painted wood columns in a deep, sophisticated grey, providing a striking contrast against the stacked castle brick stone in varying grey tones which clad the fireplace. “This choice not only tied in with the kitchen's aesthetic but also ensured that the fireplace served as an eye-catching focal point in the living area,” Angela explains. To complete the fireplace, Angela and her clients selected Calacatta Elysium tile for the hearth, a marble-like material that adds a touch of elegance and carries in the kitchens cool white tones. “A great choice that promises to remain stylish for years to come, standing up to both time and trends,” adds Angela. Together the combination of textures and materials brings a warm and sophisticated feeling to the space, perfect for guests or movie night.

A Transformative Before and After
Before the fireplace renovation, the existing fireplace was brick and red. The television was off center on an adjacent wall and lacked a cozy seating area. “By repositioning the television above the mantle and adding the stone and other elements, the rooms look and functionality changed dramatically”, adds Angela.
The goal of this home renovation was to create a harmonious design plan between the kitchen and living room. Angela successfully transformed the fireplace from a dated feature into a stunning centerpiece that harmonizes with the rest of the home. The clients’ vision of combining warm tones and rich textures was beautifully realized, creating a welcoming atmosphere perfect for both gatherings and entertaining.
